Let's Talk Supplements

Pre-workout

Pre-workout supplements promise to transform your workouts. You'll have more energy and you'll lift like never before. But do they work? You wouldn't be wrong for thinking a magical potion will help you achieve your workout goals. But don't be fooled. Your hard work and nutrition are the keys to a successful workout too.

The purpose of a pre-workout is to provide stimulation to get your heart rate up and to get your blood pumping to help you have energy. This is typically done with a dose of caffeine and other ingredients that help the body absorb caffeine faster. Unfortunately, many products are loaded with ingredients that aren't backed by science - or there's not enough of an ingredient for it to actually work. If you see a supplement that has a "proprietary blend," you need to run in the opposite direction. That's a telltale sign that the supplement is sketchy. Check your pre-workout ingredients. Do your homework so you understand what it is you’re taking. Some ingredients that are effective to have in your pre-workout are; caffeine, Beta-Alanine, vitamin D, Magnesium, Peak ATP and beetroot.

Protein Powder

Protein powders are a quick way to help ensure that your body is nourished and satisfied. People use them for a variety of reasons - to lose weight, to improve sports performance, build muscle mass and for overall wellness. Protein supports healthy blood pressure, inflammatory response, and is critical for a strong immune system. If you look around today the protein powder options are endless. Just like pre-workouts make sure you are checking ingredients. Whey protein is one of the most commonly used proteins and is best for day-to-day use. It contains all of the essential amino acids and is easily digested. Finding a protein powder that works best for you can be hard with so many options. Here are a few pointers based on the outcomes your wanting:

  • Build muscle - For muscle growth, choose a protein powder with a high biological value (a value that measures how well the body can absorb and utilize a protein). Whey protein and whey isolates are your best options.

  • Lose weight — For weight loss, choose protein with no added sugars or dextrins/maltodextrins (sweeteners made from starch).

If you have been active on my Instagram page for a while you know that I love Clean Simple Eats protein. It comes in a variety of flavors, has no added sugars and not to mention it tastes fantastic. If you weren’t the winner of the giveaway I just hosted, (come find me on instagram, more giveaways to come!) I’d like to offer a discount code for you.

Don’t let Supplements scare you! Do your research, ask questions, give them a try - but don’t forget that they aren’t a substitute for your own hard work!!
